LLM SEO is the work of making one sentence on your page quotable, because AI systems choose sources passage by passage rather than by rank position. That is why a page sitting at position 23 can still be the source an AI answer cites, and why rank and citation have become two separate scoreboards.
This page is about the second scoreboard: not which engine names you, but where on the page the quote actually comes from.
The page that taught us this
One of the posts on this site ranks position 23 for "geo vs seo" — a query doing 2,900 searches a month in the US with a keyword difficulty of 9. Position 23 is nowhere. Nobody clicks page three.
We nearly rewrote it. Then we checked what it was actually doing.
Rank and citation have come apart
A report summarized in the trade press in August 2026 found that 47% of Google AI Overview citations come from pages ranking below position five. Nearly half the sources Google's AI quotes are pages that would never earn an organic click on their own.
So a page at 23 is not automatically dead weight — it may be feeding answers that never show up in a rank tracker. And a page at 4 that buries its point in paragraph six may be doing less than its position suggests.
If the question you have is which engine names your business at all, we measured that separately across 288 AI answers and 478 Utah businesses in the Utah AI Visibility Study. This page answers a different question.
Where on the page the quote comes from
The mechanism is simpler than the industry makes it sound. AI does not quote your page — it quotes one sentence from your page. That sentence has to stand up alone, with no surrounding paragraph to prop it up.
Kevin Indig's Growth Memo analysis, as reported by Edward Sturm and others, found that 44.2% of AI citations come from the first third of the content, with roughly 16.7% from the first 10% alone. The final third receives under a quarter.
Our AEO vs SEO guide already recommends answer-first writing. These numbers are the reason why: it is not a style preference, it is where the citations physically come from.
The mistake we find on almost every site
Auditing a clinic site earlier this year we found the same error on 12 of 14 pages: the practitioner's credentials sat above the answer. Every page led with who they were rather than what the reader had asked.
An AI cannot quote a sentence about someone's qualifications as the answer to a clinical question, so it quoted a competitor instead. Moving the answer above the byline costs nothing and is the highest-leverage fix we know.
What to do this week
- Sort Search Console by impressions, not clicks. The pages being seen but not clicked are your near-misses, and they are your strongest citation candidates.
- Rewrite the first sentence of each so it answers the query completely and alone. If it needs the next sentence, it cannot be quoted.
- Move credentials, brand history and scene-setting below the answer.
- Stop scoring pages on position alone. Check whether the page is being quoted, not only where it sits.

FAQ — LLM SEO
What is LLM SEO?
LLM SEO is optimizing a page so large language models will quote it as a source in an answer. It differs from traditional SEO because the unit being selected is a passage rather than a whole page, so a self-contained opening sentence matters more than total word count or rank position.
Can a page rank badly and still be cited by AI?
Yes. A report summarized in August 2026 found 47% of Google AI Overview citations come from pages ranking below position five. Rank and citation are separate outcomes driven by different signals.
Where on the page should the answer go?
In the first sentence. Analysis reported by Edward Sturm found 44.2% of AI citations come from the first third of the content and about 16.7% from the first 10%, so anything below the fold competes for a shrinking share.
How is this different from AEO?
Answer engine optimization is the broader discipline, covered in our AEO vs SEO guide. LLM SEO as described here is the page-level mechanics inside it: which sentence gets lifted, and where on the page it needs to sit.
Sources and limits: the position-23, 2,900/month and difficulty-9 figures are from a live DataForSEO pull on 24 September 2026 (US, English). The 47% figure comes from a report summarized in the trade press in August 2026. The 44.2% and 16.7% figures are Kevin Indig's Growth Memo analysis as reported by Edward Sturm and others; we have not independently reproduced them.
